Attribute requirements are an anti-pattern designed to curb character development by forcing to spend points just to meet the requirements: typically items are designed to demand certain strength or dexterity. In reality these "tributes to realism" only limit the stat point pool which can be used to maximize character potential(e.g. An archer goes into all Dex build) or prevent some items to be used( if players see the tradeoff of spending stat point vs owning the item).

Another variation is level requirement on items/quests/areas to prevent low-level players using them: its far more logical than handicapping characters to a fraction of their stat points.
